Weekend Project: Clean Your Bathtub Drains
July 3rd 2009 20:24
For years I've had a tub that when I shower, the tub fills up halfway up my shins! Its a pretty devilishly evil clog. So today, for you're weekend project (in between shooting off fireworks and going to wet t-shirt contests) you can unclog that drain for cheap with out having to use harsh septic destroying chemicals like the liquid plumber guy.
I have 2 cheap ways to get that drain super slick, just like inception day. First, lets do my recipe that I found out by accident when I was cleaning the tub.
The late, great Billy Mays magic powder Oxi Clean. If you have an in drain plug, close it and then fill the tub. If you have a drain cover plug, like a rubber stopper or a pull stop, you'll have to alter these steps. I'll tell you how to do that at the end. Now fill your tub about a quarter the way full. Dump a full scoop of Oxi Clean into the tub and distribute evenly. Let sit for like 30 minutes. The in drain plugs don't start till about 8 inches down the drain. So the Oxi Clean water will soak into the workings of the plug and dissolve all the gunk. If you have a plug stopper that covers the drain, fill the tub up almost all the way and then increase the Oxi Clean the same amount (full scoop per quarter tub) then let drain. Not only does you tub get cleaned, your drain will be nice and shiny.
Next is a really eco-friendly option. I found it on a blog called Bonzai Aphrodite which I found via LifeHacker
This method goes like this.

Drain De-Clogger Recipe:
1/2 cup baking soda
1 cup vinegar
1 gallon boiling water
Carefully siphon all the baking soda down the drain. Pour in 1/2 of the vinegar, covering the hole so the fizz is forced down, not up (omit this for toilets, please!). Add the second half of the vinegar, following the same procedure. Allow to sit for 15 minutes or so, and then flush with an entire gallon of boiling water.
