The Digital Crutch
May 16th 2009 03:03
OK so there has been a lull in the niche blog postings. Yeah i know, tisk tisk, but whateva I'm here now and everyone still loves me....right? RIGHT? OK good.
So today i saunter into work, its pouring rain (work at a golf course). I get here and i realize that i BAM, left my smart-phone at home. I'm crushed. No twitter. No texts. No QiK. NOTHING.
Well i can manage. They have DTV in the pro shop and DSL, but its raining and you know what that means. MTA (local ISP DTV) doesn't work in the rain. I'm not kidding. Every time it rains the service goes out. Now I'm not some techno noob shouting into the darkness. I used to work for them. So i know their service. And every time it rains in the area of the golf course service goes out.
So I'm stuck here. No TV. No Internet. Pouring rain, and no one is coming out to play golf.
So i decided to write some stuff in my EEE PC for upload later...guess what i left at home.
So there i sat. The sound of each raindrop against the tin roof adding to my sadness. And i realized, why am i so dependent on these digital distractions (hey that's a good blog name).
So I'm thinking about the whole twittersphere. Its gotten to the point where mainstream media and famous figures are using it in their everyday. Ashton Kutcher and the Oprah's of the world are making it accessible to the everyday people. The Cyndy's in your high school. Your Rex's behind the Starbucks counter. Everyone is blasting micro-blogs into the void. Either no one is listening or everyone is listening.
QiK! Probably one of my favorite apps on my Windows Mobile smart-phone. It lets you do video casting and uploading to the QiK network from anywhere. Its marvelous! But none of the famous faces have made it trendy...not yet.
So i wonder, why am i so stuck on these services? Heck when the TV goes out it becomes a chore to read a Golf Weekly, where i would have been reading the golf weekly anyway with the TV on!
Its kind of the same obsession i have with podcast's. I'm constantly looking for content pumped into my eyes and ears.
Its not just entertainment its knowledge.
Someone, help me out here. Let me know why you like these services. What makes them appealing to you. Is it a problem that everyone is becoming and exobisionist nowadays?
