Mold Happens or;Living with Libel
August 6th 2009 16:02
So this story is about a week old but I've just had it come across my desk and it is pretty much a poster child of the BAD things that can happen when you exist in the modern world.
A twitter user, Amanda Bonnen, had made a tweet with the contents being:
Harmless yes? NO! After this tweet was blasted into the sphere, the real estate company (http://www.horizonrealtygroup.com/) that is renting the apartment to her saw the tweet and have thusly sued her for Libel for the amount of $50,000.
Wow! The tweet was posted in May, and they are now just getting around to issuing her the papers. The best part I found was that Horizon Realty employee, Jeff Michael, was quoted as saying
Nice job Jeff, the internet is going to have a field day with that one.
WELL, lets get to the point of this one.
We live in the here and now, the web 2.0 society, the 4chan users backyard, the proverbial INTERWEBS. Everything we do is recorded somewhere, and then backed upped somewhere else. Aggregated and turned into a feed on a third location, and downloaded and copied onto offline locations. Basically, everything you do on the internet, be it a Myspace comment or a tweet about your moldy apartment, it will be around forever and viewable by all. And of course there are other legal rights that go along with those things. Did you know, that if you post a picture on Myspace the FOX corporation owns the rights to post it on any FOX media outlet, be it television or print media. But thats another story.
So if you are at all worried about someone seeing what you put on the internet, then don't. If you are worried that Johnny will see you drinking with Frank, don't put it anywhere, not even a private photobucket.
Chances are, this is just going to get thrown out, and I'm sure that some sort of raid is being planned out on the Real Estate group. These people should honestly just calm down. Its one persons unsolicited statement to friends. Nobody knew what company sold her the apartment. People only knew it was Horizon because they made a ruckus.
Just again, and I am going to hammer this into your heads every single time this kind of stuff happens, just calm the F- down and just let things go.

You should just come anyway. Who said sleeping in a moldy apartment is bad for you? Horizon Realty thinks it's okay.

We're a sue first, ask questions later kind of an organization.
